Kaly Kids
Kaly's very own slopestyle sensation 14yo Henry Bessell hasn't been to the beach lately BUT he has spent 5 out of the past 12 months living, training and competing at Perisher, Cardrona (NZ), Breckenridge (USA) and Ischgl (Austria). Henry's 'hard work' has paid off - he was awarded ACT Snowsports 'Snowboarder of the Year', with big air, halfpipe, boardercross and slopestyle podiums in the Australian Junior Series and a huge slopestyle win at the Australian leg of the World Rookiefest.
While it sounds glamorous, living out of a suitcase isn't always easy - 18 days in NZ resulted in only 2 days of snowboarding (the weather and snow are not always better in NZ). Despite the foul conditions, Henry stepped it up and competed out of his age group to achieve a credible 6th at the NZ Junior Nationals. Mum (Tracey) and Dad (Kim) had overlapping holidays and joined Henry for a White Christmas in Breckenridge - everyone had a great time. Henry experienced almost 'too much pow', trained and gained new skills, including cab 9s (taking off backwards and spinning 2.5 rotations off a kicker).

In mid-March, Henry headed off to Europe - warm-up competitions were cancelled and travel plans changed quickly. His French language skills were severely tested and he reported that the '80s inspired one-piece is still worn in some parts of France'. Happily, Henry is now in Ischgl (huge on and off-piste areas, a snowpark with big kickers, and a 'party town' reputation), where he will compete against the world's top junior snowboarders in the World RookieFest Final on 6-10 April - GOOD LUCK HENRY!!! Henry wants to thank his Mum and Dad, coach Chad Collier, and his sponsors - Oakley, Rome SDS, IRideSideways and Sandbox. He also looks forward to packing his boardbag again for the upcoming Australian season.
